Who is this course for?

This course is aimed at Museum, Art Gallery and Heritage Managers who are new to volunteer management and/or who have had little or no formal training in the area.

What will it cover?

·      How to develop a volunteering strategy

·      How to engage and motivate volunteers

·      Resolving common volunteering issues – includes time to share and discuss examples from your own     organisation

·      How to evaluate your volunteer programme

Who will be running it?

It will be led by Alex Lindley, Director of Alchemy, an HR and Organisational Development consultant working primarily with cultural and Not-for-Profit sectors. With a background in Learning and Development and Human Resource Management, Alex advises clients on volunteer management and has run a number of volunteer management training courses, as well as being an active volunteer herself. She brings insights and best practice from a wide range of organisations, from small volunteer run museums to national museum groups – and a great deal in between!

She will be supported by Helen Harris, Volunteer Manager at the York Archaeological Trust with responsibility for a team of 70 volunteers involved the Trust’s five attractions.  She has been involved in Volunteer Management since 2003 and has experience of both a small museum and a larger organisation setting.  She has also provided consultancy advice on establishing volunteer programmes and their effective management.

How much will it cost?

The course is priced at £35 for Fed members and £45 for non-fed members. Coffee and tea will be provided and lunch is available to purchase in the area. There are 3 free volunteer places for Fed individual/institutional members available on a first come first served basis.

Where is it?

It will be located at the St Bede’s Pastoral Centre 21Blossom Street York YO24 1AQ, close to the Railway station and public car parks. Nearby is the Bar Convent, which is well worth a visit.
