Course Details

Do you want to improve how your museum handles and identifies hazardous materials within its collections?

This course will look at various aspects of Collections – the threats to the well being of various objects, practical ways of dealing with the problems and prevention of further damage, but thinking pragmatically in this tight fiscal period within Museums and Historic Collections.

The trainer will be Nettie Cook, who trained in general conservation then specialised in Furniture Restoration at the London College of Furniture. She worked in two Local Authority Museum Services, and while in Essex, did a placement at the British Museum Organics section in Orsman Road. She joined the National Trust as a Regional Conservator in 1986, working across the central section of the country and North Wales. Her role was to train House staff in how to care for the very varied collections within NT Properties and to assist with all aspects of Preventive Conservation. She is now freelance working for institutions including National Trust, English Heritage and the Churches Conservation Trust.

The course organiser is Alison Mitchelson, freelance training provider, who has many years experience of working as a collection registrar for institutions including the National Trust. The full itinerary will be made available closer to the date. If you book and have particulars queries you would like to see covered please forward them to our training provider, Alison Mitchelson, whose contact email is below.

Who should attend?

Museum staff and volunteers who look after collection management and/or conservation of collections. Any IOSH responsible museum officers would also find this course very useful.

Tea and Coffee refreshments on arrival are included. Lunch is not included, suitable venues for lunch can be found at the museum and in the nearby convenient city centre cafes and shops.
